Blogging Assignment – DUE Friday, May 9th

7 05 2008
On Tuesday, we visited a turn-of-the-century orange grove formerly owned by the Key family. It gave us a look at what life would have been like here 100 years ago. Take a look at our pictures below and then, in three or more COMPLETE sentences, tell me what you would have LIKED about living back then, what you would NOT have liked, and what your favorite part of the field trip was. I can’t wait to see your comments! :)

Third Grade News-April 28-May 2

· Field Day was a huge success! Thanks to everyone for all the time and effort put into making Salem a great place.
· We are back to our normal routine this week with our home education. Please continue to have your child get plenty of rest and bring healthy snacks and lunches. I can tell already that they are tired and ready to be finished with school. The bad news is that we still have six weeks left and we want to make the most of them!
· Free dress day—Friday, May 2
· Plan to attend the Lutheran School’s Art Show at Lutheran High on Friday, May 2. You will be getting a note if the artist who lives in your home will be represented.
· We will be visiting Key Ranch, a working orange grove and home built at the turn of the century (last century) on Tuesday, May 6. If you are driving for us, please be at our door at 8:15 so we can be ready to hop in our cars at 8:20. Key ranch is in Placentia. If you are driving and would like to be a photographer for us, please bring your camera.
· Talent show try-outs will be May 13-14. Look for more information from the student council soon. Info may also be accessed online at salemorange.com.
· FYI: free dress will begin May 27 and continue for the rest of the year. Make sure your child uses any free dress certificates earned before that date.
Miss Darneal, our fantastic student teacher, will be teaching full time this week. This is her final week with us and we are going to miss her A LOT!

Field Day – Friday, April 25th

18 04 2008

If you’d like to come and watch Mrs. Gilbert’s Yellow Bananas win the whole thing, be sure to join us for Field Day on Friday! :) Here’s all the info you need:

Field Day is Salem’s all school track meet. There are ten teams–all different colors. Eighth graders are the captains of the teams and seventh graders run the meet. Each team has participants from grades 1-6. All the sixth graders run against each other, then the fifth graders, etc. It is a loud, fun, exciting day! It is also hard to keep the participants who aren’t running at the time focused on what is happening. If you are able to join us, please encourage your child to stay with his/her team and root for those who are running at the time.

The file below is the APPROXIMATE schedule for Field Day. Some years we are ahead of schedule, some years we are behind. Parking will be at a minimum, so carpool if you can. We are allowed to park at the horse arena below, so if you can’t find parking on campus, park there and walk up the hill. DO NOT park in the neighborhood without permission from the residents.

Third Grade News – April 14-18

13 04 2008

· We will be continuing our ITBS scholastic testing for the next two weeks. We will also be practicing for Field Day (4/25) during that time. We would like to encourage you to make a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast each morning a priority for the rest of the year, but, at the least, for two more weeks. Thanks for making our testing a priority.
There will be NO homework (except for reading) this week due to testing! NO memory or spelling tests.
· Children of the World Choir will be leading our chapel this week—April 16. They will also be performing that night in the gym at 7:00. Plan to join us for both!
· Restaurant Day—Thursday, April 17—Visit Chick-fil-A at The Tustin Marketplace anytime between 6:30 AM and 8:00 PM and 20% will go back to Salem! Stop between 4:30 and 5:30 and Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Ellwein and Mrs. Surridge will personally make your meal for you!! (That’s scary!!!)
· Plan to visit the science fair in the gym on April 17 or 18
· Multi-color Day—Friday, April 18—You may wear red, blue, yellow or orange—the catch is: the color you pick is the ONLY color you can wear. Be creative!
· Pizza—Monday, April 21
· Another PTL Technology Info night is planned for April 22—come see some new technology we are incorporating into the classroom.
· Please remind your child to bring well fitted shoes that can be tied or secured to his/her feet every Wed. and Fri. for p.e. and Tues. and Thurs. for the next two weeks for Field Day practice.
**Report Cards** came home on Friday. It seems as though I either had a computer glitch OR I just forgot to fill in the last two squares in the behavior columns… Oops! Sorry about that. If I need to address any of those areas for your child, I will contact you personally.
